Project OverviewAn environmentally friendly heat and power facility at the University of Aberdeen The £8.4m project involved the installation of a combined heat and power plant and distribution network, which serves two halls of residence, housing almost 400 students, along with 28 academic buildings, with approximately 2,000 staff. The new system is designed to replace the 40-year-old steam-generating system and offers several key environmental benefits. It cuts carbon emissions by 10% and polluting oxide of nitrogen levels by a massive 45%. Its high efficiency and estimated to save 123,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being pumped into the air over its expected 25-year lifespan. The project at King’s College campus involved the installation of new centralised boiler and a combined heat and power (CHP) facility. The building is set into the banking and is partly be obscured by existing trees and a wall. Work on the first stage involved the construction of the new heating station and chimney at Bedford Road. |

Design DetailsThe system consist of 3 boilers and a CHP engine with a combined heat out put of 22.3MW. The content of the entire district heating system was estimated at 268,000 litres. A Transfero pump controlled pressurisation system was chosen because it makes use of pressure less vessels requiring no statutory inspections. With a maximum expansion volume in excess of 8000litres the 2 x 5000 litre pressure less vessels can accommodate all that expansion with a minimum of space requirement. A large400NB Zeparo dirt separator was fitted in the flow to deaerate the system and keep it clean. |
