Project Overview

Project HAL is the new Newspaper  printing  plant for News International. It will have 12 state of the art colour printing presses with a capacity of 150 papers per second. At 87000m2 the size of the building is equivalent to 8 football pitches. Skanska made extensive use off site fabricating techniques to install over 30km of piping. EA’s experience gained at Heathrow’s T5 with modular pipe installations came in useful to design for thermal expansion and building movement. In all larger diameter pipe runs EA made exclusive use of restrained expansion joints such as angulars, gimbals or laterals to minimise anchor loads and reduce steelwork costs. All expansion joints are accurately guided using the unique ultra low friction Easyslide guides further reducing the anchor loads. To keep the system free of dissolved gases and to remove any trapped air pockets DSSR specified the revolutionary Pneumatex Vento pressure step degassers on every system. Skanska also fitted  Zeparo dirt separator to keep the systems clean during their operational life.
